Antiques & Collectibles Class in Los Gatos • Open for Registration

Last year we held a successful and fun class on antiques and collectibles. We have again partnered with Los Gatos Recreation to offer another class about antiques.

This spring class on Antiques and Collectibles will meet at the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce Conference room, located at 10 Station Way in Los Gatos. It will be held on Tuesday nights, from 6:30 to 8:30, starting March 20th and continuing through April 24th ... More information below ... Set aside the dates and plan to join us.

Antiques & Collectibles: Some Class Details

The class will be organized around traditional antiques and vintage collections ... some popular, others a little bit more obscure, but just as interesting. In each class session we will discuss the history and timelines of the topic, to give us an understanding of styles and materials, as well as a basis to be able to decipher the age and provenance of an antique. We will bring some samples of the antiques and collectibles into class (you are encouraged to bring in your own examples as well) and we will also view examples of the works of the important designers and artists who have created the masterworks. Each class will end with a chance for all attendees to show and tell their own antiques and collections.

The instructor will be Bob Bortfeld, lifelong collector and co-owner of Vintages of Los Gatos.

Antiques & Collectibles: Topics

Week 1: Introductions, Collections, History, Terminology 
Week 2: Silver, focusing on 20th century silver, including identifying marks
Week 3: Porcelain & Pottery, including identifying marks
Week 4: Jewelry, focusing on 20th century costume jewelry
Week 5: Ephemera, a collage of paper and printed collectibles
Week 6: Your Night ... we will determine the content of this session together during the first few weeks of the program.

Antiques & Collectibles: Course Description, Catalog & Registration

Course Description: Expand your appreciation for antiques through this fun and educational 6-week workshop! Class will be provided with a basic vocabulary and timeline for understanding antiques and collectibles. Each class will feature a bit of history, a collection theme and a “show & tell” by attendees. Class themes will include silver, jewelry, china/porcelain, ephemera and more. Participants will be provided a detailed class schedule at the first class describing what types of collections will be the focus of each session and the types of items to bring in for show and tell segments.

Old Lava Stone Church in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii

Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii On our recent vacation to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, we stopped in to this wonderful old church. We had seen is many times, but this was the first time we stopped to look inside. Wow! The hand-carved altar and communion rail are gorgeous! The stained glass windows are equally as beautiful. The Christ Memorial Episcopal Church is located just off the main highway in the town of Kilauea. It is still an active mission church, with services on Sundays and Holy Days. According to the church's website: There is also an interesting history attached to the church itself. As early as 1888 worship services were held in Kilauea ... By 1924 the time had come for a permanent church in Kilauea ... In 1939 the Kilauea Sugar Company deeded the churchyard to Christ Memorial Church and gave the native stone used in the erection of the present building ... Rosaries, Prayer Books & Religious Medals

It's the time of year when Christians, Catholics in particular, celebrate post Easter rituals like first communion and confirmation.  And June is known as weddings month!  At Vintages we always have a nice selection of vintage religious items like rosaries, medals of saints and the Holy Family, prayer books and pocket shrines.  Below is a sampling of what is currently available. Rosaries with beads of crystal, sterling silver, olive wood and molded glass.  We even have a few that have reliquaries included. Rosary cases, holy water fonts, little plaques with holy pictures and ecclesiastical sayings. Wonderful old miniature prayer books, first communion mementos, and a new testament bible from the early 1700s. Religious medals, pocket crucifixes and shrines.  In addition, we have a large selection of crosses.
