Andersen's Fairy Tales Illustrated by Arthur Szyk 1945

This is a gorgeously illustrated version of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales. A year ago I was fascinated by the miniature paintings and illuminations done by Arthur Szyk. Well, this book is filled with illustrations by Szyk. It has ten wonderful color illustrations and dozens of black and white ones as well. He brings to life the stories. The Little Tiny lady is precious. The Marsh King's Daughter is beautiful. The emperor in The Nightingale is sad. The king and queen in Little Ida's Flower garden are royal indeed.

    I was given this book -- I had many of the G&D editions, including all the Alcott -- for my 9th birthday in 1960. I took it outside to read under a tree on a lawn chair when the palm of my left hand was stung by a wasp. Screaming with pain, and with a hitherto undiagnosed bee allergy, my hand was badly swollen and my parents took me to an ER.
    It turned into a very rainy day, and the book was all warped when I remembered it, but we were able to salvage it. A few years ago I bought the 2004 reprint. The Szyk images always made me sad as a child, but I grew to love all his work later when I was getting my MA in kid lit, and I was astonished to learn that he had been a political cartoonist in Europe. Thank you for bringing these exquisite and moving illustrations to the attention of your followers.

Old Lava Stone Church in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii

Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii On our recent vacation to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, we stopped in to this wonderful old church. We had seen is many times, but this was the first time we stopped to look inside. Wow! The hand-carved altar and communion rail are gorgeous! The stained glass windows are equally as beautiful. The Christ Memorial Episcopal Church is located just off the main highway in the town of Kilauea. It is still an active mission church, with services on Sundays and Holy Days. According to the church's website: There is also an interesting history attached to the church itself. As early as 1888 worship services were held in Kilauea ... By 1924 the time had come for a permanent church in Kilauea ... Rosaries, Prayer Books & Religious Medals
