This past weekend we went to see the new exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles • Hawaii’s Alfred Shaheen: Fabric to Fashion.  Growing up in Hawaii, I lived with the fifties' surge in the popularity of Aloha shirts.  When not in shorts and a T-shirt, we were wearing shorts and an Aloha shirt!  If it was a special occasion we wore our best, an Aloha shirt from Shaheen's. This exhibit is a celebration of the legacy of textile designer and master fabric printer Alfred Shaheen, and the origins of the Hawaiian print and Aloha shirt industry. This is the first major retrospective exhibition of Hawaiian textiles and aloha wear manufactured by Alfred Shaheen on the island of Oahu over a 40-year period.  It is a smallish exhibit, but very well done and a lesson in what can be accomplished if one has vision and perseverance.  Well worth the hour or so to see it and you will come away with a heightened appreciation of beautiful, hand printed fabric, a...

Los Gatos is a wonderful Town.  There are events and activities going on nearly every week in the summertime.  Plus there are gorgeous hiking and walking trails , superb wineries , several spacious parks and a couple of excellent local museums to visit. The Los Gatos Farmers' Market offers some of the best organic and non-organic produce from local growers as well specialty foods and fresh cut flowers every Sunday in the downtown Los Gatos Town Plaza Park, rain or shine from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. year around. The Annual Los Gatos Music in the Park series continues this year on Sunday afternoons from June 20th through August 29th on the lawn in front of the Civic Center.  Great venue, great music and it's free!  Jazz on the Plazz  hosts free concerts on Wednesday evenings from June 20th through August 25th at Town Plaza Park. Back for the Summer is Second Saturdays, Los Gatos' Town Shopping and Visitor Event. Come on downtown and enjoy a special day of fun, with music, wine tastings, special restaurant events and, most of all, shopping specials all over town. Vintages is again featuring a gift with $25.00 purchase, as well as refreshments in the afternoon. This summer's dates are June 12th, July 10th and August 14th.
